Frequently Asked Questions for Couples Ask a Wedding Photographer before booking
Choosing your wedding photographer is one of the most important decisions you’ll make when planning your wedding day. Long after the day is over, your photographs are what remain, this is a guide on the best Questions to Ask your Wedding Photographer.
It’s completely natural to have questions before booking.
As a documentary wedding photographer, these are the most important questions couples should ask — along with honest answers to help you feel confident in your decision.
- • How far in advance should we book?
• What photography style do you offer?
• How many photos will we receive?
• How long does it take to receive the photos?
• Do you bring backup equipment?
• What happens if it rains?
• Can we see full wedding galleries?
1. How far in advance should we book our wedding photographer?
Most couples book their wedding photographer 9–18 months in advance, especially for popular spring and summer dates. Saturdays between May and September tend to book up first.
If you’re planning a weekday wedding, winter wedding, or elopement, there may be more flexibility — but it’s always best to enquire as soon as you’ve secured your venue.
Top tip: If photography is important to you, book your photographer before most other suppliers.
2. What style of wedding photography do you offer?
This is a popular questions to ask a wedding photographer, I specialise in documentary wedding photography style, also known as natural or reportage photography.
This means:
- Minimal posing and direction
- Capturing real moments as they happen
- Natural emotions, interactions, and atmosphere
I’ll step in when needed (such as for family group photos), but for most of the day I work unobtrusively so you can fully enjoy your wedding. As a documentary wedding photographer I will also guide you on when the best light is for relaxed couple photos at your venue.
3. We’re not comfortable in front of the camera — is that a problem?
This is a great questions to ask a wedding photographer, its one of the most common worries couples have — and the answer is no, not at all.
Most of my couples tell me they feel awkward having their photo taken, which is exactly why documentary photography works so well. You don’t need to know how to pose or what to do — I’ll guide you gently when needed and otherwise let you be yourselves.
By the end of the day, many couples say they forgot they were being photographed. Check out a real wedding blog here.
4. Do you offer posed or group photos as well?
Yes. While my approach is mostly documentary, I’m always happy to include:
- Family group photos
- A short, relaxed couple portrait session
I keep this part of the day calm and efficient so you’re not away from your guests for long, and the photos still feel natural and unforced.
5. How long do we need our wedding photographer for?
Coverage depends on your wedding plans, but most couples choose 8–10 hours of photography.I also do micro packages 2-3 hours to cover small London register office weddings.
This usually covers:
- Morning preparations
- Ceremony
- Drinks reception
- Couple portraits and cake cut
- Speeches and first dance
- The first part of the evening celebrations
I’m always happy to help you decide what coverage best suits your day, you can view more of my documentary wedding phtography here.
6. How many photos will we receive?
There’s no strict limit, as every wedding is different. On average, couples receive:
- 400–700 carefully edited images for a full-day wedding, this also depends on the hours covered. A two hour wedding would expect 70-250 photos depending on what’s going on.
Rather than focusing on quantity, I focus on telling the complete story of your day through meaningful moments.
7. How long does it take to receive our wedding photos?
You will receive your full wedding gallery within 6–8 weeks.
During peak season, turnaround times may be slightly longer, but I’ll always keep you updated. You’ll receive your photos via a private online gallery where you can download, share, and order prints.
8. Do you travel for weddings?
Yes — I photograph weddings across weddings across London, kent, UK, and destination locations abroad such as Italy, and Cyprus or anywhere else where couples plan their wedding.
Travel is usually included in Uk weddings, and I’m always happy to provide a clear quote for weddings further afield.
9. What happens if it rains on our wedding day?
Rain is nothing to worry about — some of the most atmospheric wedding photos happen in less-than-perfect weather.
I’ll always look for:
- Beautiful indoor light
- Covered outdoor areas
- Creative ways to use the weather
Your wedding story is about what happens, not perfect conditions.

How to choose the right wedding photographer for you?
Choosing the right wedding photographer is about more than just beautiful images — it’s about finding someone whose style and approach truly fits your day. If you’re drawn to natural, documentary-style photography, look for a photographer who captures real moments rather than heavily posed images.
It’s also important to choose someone you feel comfortable around, as your photographer will be with you throughout much of the day. A relaxed and friendly approach helps you feel at ease, allowing genuine moments to unfold naturally.
Experience plays a key role too. A professional wedding photographer will know how to handle different lighting conditions, timelines, and unexpected moments, ensuring your day is captured seamlessly from start to finish.
